About the Book
Increasing the water resources and proper application of regularized irrigation system have been greatly
felt by our government and due importance is being given to the Department of Irrigation and Water Management to
find out new means and methods that can be safely applied to satisfy the growing demand of agricultural produces.
As indicated by the words "Experience is the matter of inventions", the experiences gained by the ancient
Thamils on Irrigation & water Management could aid at least to some extent to find out new means and methods
to be applied in the process of Irrigation & water Management to solve the present day problems
on Irrigational works.
The present work is the thesis submitted by the author for her M.Phil. Degree course. The techniques and
talents of the ancient Thamils on irrigational works of those days are all expounded briefly and explicitly,
supported by Literary, archaeological and epigraphical evidences added with illustrations, Maps and Tables.
The book will definitely serve as a source book for historians, agriculturists, people of Irrigation Department
and for all researchers, who are working in this field.
Ancient Tamils had well-defined principles in irrigation and agriculture. Irrigation works undertaken by the
Sangam people, Scientific knowledge of the ancient Tamils in constructing tanks and wells, their technical
skill in constructing dams and barrages across rivers to divert water for irrigation are discussed with
sources of inscriptional and archaeological references. Mechanical devices used by the ancient Tamils for
water-lifting from wells and ponds, their engineering talents in constructing sluices in tanks and dams
to regulate water-discharge, their awareness in the use of closed-pipe system in water transportation
are all dealt with. Methods of regulating water supply in those days- Official machinery dealing with
water management; Rules and regulations on water management enforced under Pallava period and the
efforts taken in the maintenance of water reservoirs repairs, renovations and maintenance of irrigation works
and sources of revenue for these maintenance works are clearly discussed.
